Recording a Video to VidGrid on a Chromebook

Installing The VidGrid Chrome Extension

  1. To record a video on your Chromebook, click the link to install the VidGrid Chrome extension.
  2. Click the blue Add to Chrome button in the top right-hand corner and then click Add extension. You will receive a pop-up notification that the extension has been added and you will see the VidGrid icon in the Chrome toolbar (to the right of the address bar).
  1. Once the extension is installed, you will be prompted to give it rights to your camera and microphone. Click Allow.

**Do not authenticate the Chrome extension in classrooms, public computers, or shared Chrome browsers. It is recommended that you only install and authenticate this Chrome extension on computers that you use regularly and that only you have access to.**

  1. The VidGrid Chrome extension needs to be activated in order for you to use it to record video and for those videos to show up in your VidGrid account. Navigate to app.vidgrid.com and sign-in to your VidGrid account (if you need to create an account to get started with VidGrid, click here).
  2. Right-click on the blue Record button (in the top left-hand corner of the screen) and click Authenticate Chrome Extension.
  • You’ll know that authentication was successful by a green notification in the top right-hand corner of the window.

  1. When you’re ready to record a video click the VidGrid icon in the Chrome toolbar (to the right of the address bar).

Starting a Recording

When you’re ready to record a video click the VidGrid icon in the Chrome toolbar (to the right of the address bar).

Each of the buttons across the top allows you to enable the recording from that device.

  • If you want to record your voice talking, enable the MIC.
  • If you want to record your WebCam, enable the CAM.
  • If you want to record your screen, enable SCREEN.

Name the video by typing in the Recording Title field. Once you’ve enabled what you want to record, be sure the appropriate input device is selected in the dropdown below the title field.

Disable the Auto Download Records settings unless you want a copy of the video to also be saved on your computer/device.

When you’re ready to record, click the red Start Recording button at the bottom of the dialog box.

If you chose to record your screen then you will get an additional dialog box prompting you to select what screen to record (if you have more than one) or to allow the screen to be shared and recorded.

If you left the settings for Countdown enabled then you will get a countdown before the recording begins. This countdown only begins after you’ve selected to share your screen (if you chose to record the screen). You’ll also notice that once the recording begins the VidGrid icon in the Chrome toolbar has a counter that displays the length of the recording as you go.

Stoping and Pausing a Recording

Click the VidGrid icon in the Chrome toolbar again to Pause or Stop the recording.

If you Pause the recording you can click the icon again to resume recording. If you Stop the recording then the video will automatically begin to upload to VidGrid.

Once the video has uploaded a new tab will open showing the video processing in VidGrid. If you are still logged into VidGrid you can take advantage of all of the features of VidGrid, like editing, captioning, etc. from here. If you are not logged in, simply login to your account to view and/or edit the newly created and uploaded video.
