Opening iqy Files on Mac

This guide will walk you through the simple steps to open IQY files on your Mac. Often originating from Informer here on campus, IQY files are web query files that allow you to retrieve data directly into a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel.

The initial step is to retrieve the iqy file. Often these files are emailed to you or saved directly from Informer. The iqy files are not able to be directly opened by double-clicking the file on a Mac, instead we need to follow a couple of steps to open this file from Microsoft Excel on a Mac.

  1. With the iqy file stored on your Mac, open Microsoft Excel.

  1. With Excel open to a new workbook, click the Data menu — the one at the top of the screen, not the one on the ribbon —
  2. Click Get Data
  3. Click Run Web Query.

Another arrow labeled "3" points from the "Data" dropdown to "Get Data (Power Query)" under "Table Tools." A third arrow labeled "4" points from the "Get Data (Power Query)" submenu to "Run Web Query..." which is highlighted. The spreadsheet grid is visible but mostly empty.
  1. Navigate to the file on your computer
  2. Click Get Data

An arrow labeled "5" points from the top of the dialog to the selected file, "Curriculum Se...ject (1)DH.iqy," which is highlighted. Another arrow labeled "6" points from the main content area of the dialog down to the "Get Data" button, which is green and highlighted, at the bottom right. A large preview of a document icon is visible on the right side of the dialog.
  1. At the Import Data prompt, click the Import button to pull the data into the blank workbook and sheet that you are currently on.
A modal dialog box titled "Import Data" is displayed. It asks "How do you want to view this data?" with radio button options for "Table" (selected), "PivotTable", "PivotChart", and "Connection only". Below that, it asks "Where do you want to put the data?" with radio button options for "Existing sheet:" (selected) and "New sheet". The "Existing sheet" option has a text field next to it, which displays "=A1". At the bottom of the dialog are buttons for "Properties...", "Parameters...", "Cancel", and "Import" (highlighted in green).
  1. Depending on the data being pulled, there may be additional prompts. The screenshot below is an example of one such additional prompt. It is recommended that you not check the box to Use this value/reference for future refreshes because this will make it more difficult to pull in different data in the future.
A modal dialog box titled "Enter Parameter Value" is displayed. It contains a text input field labeled "Enter Term" and an unchecked checkbox labeled "Use this value/reference for future refreshes". At the bottom of the dialog are two buttons: "Cancel" and "OK" (highlighted in green).
