Mandatory Course Entry Quiz (MCEQ)

***The MCEQ will no longer be used at CVCC starting in Spring 2022. The Enrollment Verification Assignment (EVA) directions should now be followed. Click here to go to the EVA directions.

What is a Mandatory Course Entry Quiz?

In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations §668.22 Treatment of title IV funds when a student withdraws and the State Board of Community Colleges Code 1G SBCCC 200.93 Reporting of Student Hours In Membership for Curriculum Classes, students enrolled in online courses – i.e. non-seated and non-hybrid – are required to verify their enrollment by completing an assignment on or before the census date for a course (10% point). CVCC refers to this specific assignment as the Mandatory Course Entry Quiz, or MCEQ for short.

Students MUST complete the quiz on or before the census date. Students are not allowed to enter the course – i.e. be given an “P” in Self Service Attendance (the new “E”) – after the census date has occurred. This is a STATE policy. Students should not be allowed to take the MCEQ after the census date has passed.

Please make sure you set the end date for the MCEQ on the census date at 11:59 PM in Blackboard to prevent students from attempting to enter after the census date. The MCEQ should NOT be available to students before the first day of class. The quiz should only be available from the first day of class until the census date at midnight.

Locating the Census Date (10% Point)

You can locate your course’s Census Date by doing the following.

  1. Login to the CVCC Portal at my.cvcc.edu.
  2. In the Self-Service Menu, click on Faculty to expand the menu, then click on Faculty Information.
  3. Click on Class Roster from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the Class Roster Select Section tab, click on the Section Name and Title for which you wish to locate the census date.
  5. The Census Date will be located in the third column of the Class Roster tab.

Creating an MCEQ

If you need assistance creating an MCEQ for your course, you can check out this video or email the HelpDesk at to get in contact with a member of the Educational Technology Department.

As a quick reference, an MCEQ should include:

  • five questions;
  • some, but not all, of the questions must be related to the course;
  • is created by the instructor;
  • is included in all online/internet courses.

Mandatory Course Entry Quiz Attempt Statistics

After the Census Date for your course has passed, you must submit a record of your MCEQ Attempt Statistics to the FTE Technician. The following steps outline how to generate the attempt statistics in Blackboard.

  1. In your Blackboard course, under the Control Panel, click on the arrow to the right of the words Grade Center.
  2. Go to the Mandatory Course Entry Quiz Column. Click on the down arrow to the right of the column name.
  3. Select View All Attempts.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Show All.
  5. Verify that the columns are sorted correctly, with the last name alphabetically sorted. Do this by clicking on the Last Name column. A small triangle should appear to indicate that the sorting is by last name.
  6. Now press, at the same time, control+P on your keyboard to print the page. If you’re on a computer running macOS, then you will need to press command+P to print the page.

If you are submitting your attempt statistics via interoffice mail, then select the printer you wish to print to and address the interoffice envelope to Anna Fredell, FTE Technician.

If you are submitting your attempt statistics via email, then from the printer list, select Save as PDF and email the PDF to Anna Fredell at .
