Getting Started with VidGrid

Already signed up? Go directly to VidGrid & sign-in –> app.vidgrid.com

VidGrid is CVCC’s own video streaming platform. Think of VidGrid like our own personal YouTube, but with more features! Videos will also be housed in our own as-private-as-you-want-it-to-be space. With VidGrid you can quickly and easily create videos from directly within Blackboard and place them in your Blackboard course. You can also create links to these videos to share via email or other means. Students no longer have to download a huge video file or have to have special software to view the video – they can instead just click to play, and on any device. Creating videos for your students is also quick and easy, which makes VidGrid a revolutionary tool for engaging today’s student. Once you’ve created the videos you can then add graded or non-graded quiz questions, and more!

See Login to or Create VidGrid Account for Instructors to get started and create your VidGrid account. Additionally, you can also get started from directly within Blackboard by going into a course and from any item click the plus sign with a circle around it and then click VidGrid video. You can always contact  should you need assistance.

You can insert a VidGrid video anywhere in Blackboard where you see the text editor. Here’s a quick tutorial:

Captioning

Video itself is an exciting new addition to the arsenal of tools available to faculty at CVCC, and included in this solution is the ability to caption. There are slight changes to the captioning process, including a couple of questions you need to ask yourself:

  1. Have you been notified that you have a student who requires captioning? If so, YES, caption your video.
  2. Do you intend to use your video for more than one semester? If so, YES, caption your video.

If you answer yes to either of the questions above then YES, caption your video, otherwise you do not need to. Keep in mind that a course’s accessibility is your responsibility, so be sure to answer these questions honestly. The following flowchart should help you make that decision:

In terms of captioning, you can

  • upload a caption file that was previously created (how to download captioning files from YouTube),
  • caption the file yourself and upload it to VidGrid, or
  • use VidGrid’s machine captioning (available within ~5 minutes from request) and then edit the captions from directly within the site (see this video, also available below, for a quick tutorial).

If you have questions about captioning videos you don’t own or that are copyrighted, start with this document..

Want Your Students to Make Videos?

If you’re interested in having your students record videos as an assignment, you’ll need to do a little setup first. There is also a video that you can place in your course for your students on how to create videos for submission as assignments in your course. If you want students to be able to watch each other’s videos, have them post the link in the discussion board. Students can upload videos from their phone or use a computer to record a video.

A microphone and camera will be necessary to use VidGrid. If you do not already have a microphone and/or camera, USB headsets with microphones and webcams are available for checkout in the library.
