Fix for Server Error Downloading Word Document
In a recent Blackboard SaaS update, an error occurs that says “404 – File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.” The following steps can be followed to download a PDF version of the Word document.
Fix (for Instructors): Uploading the Document as a “File”
If you have already uploaded the Microsoft Office document previously, then you can use the “Browse Content Collection” option to locate the file and link to it.
- Navigate to the Content Area where the Microsoft Document is located.
- Click on Build Content in the top menu.
- Select “File” from the drop-down menu.
- Give the “File” a name.
- Click Broswe Content Collection.
- Locate the file in Content Collection. If you are having trouble locating the file in Content Collection, it may be located inside another folder from a previous course copy.
- Click Submit.
If you are uploading the document for the first time, follow the same direction, except in Step 5, select “Browse Local Files” to locate the file on your computer or device.
Workaround (for Students): Blackboard Ally
- Locate a Word document in Blackboard that you need to download.
- Click they Ally download button next to the file name.
- From the pop-up menu, select “Tagged PDF”.
- Click the “Download” button.
A PDF version of the Word document will be downloaded to your computer’s Downloads folder.
Because the downloaded document in this method is a PDF, it will not be able to be edited. If you have a file that can be edited, the document must be uploaded using the first method on this page.
