Creating a Test in Blackboard from a Vendor Question Pool (Cengage)

Purpose

This guide will help you create a Blackboard test using a question pool imported from a vendor, such as Cengage. You will learn how to select questions from the pool and deploy the test in your course.


Before You Begin

  • Import the vendor-provided question pool into your Blackboard course.
  • Confirm the pool appears in Control Panel > Course Tools > Tests, Surveys, and Pools > Pools.

Step 1: Access the Test Creation Tool

  1. In your Blackboard course, open the Control Panel.
  2. Click Course Tools.
  3. Select Tests, Surveys, and Pools.
  4. Click Tests.
  5. Select Build Test.

Step 2: Name and Describe Your Test

  1. In the Test Information screen:
    • Name your test (e.g., Chapter 3 Quiz).
    • Add a Description (optional — shown before students begin the test).
    • Add Instructions (optional — shown when students begin the test).
  2. Click Submit

Step 3: Add Questions from the Pool

  1. On the Test Canvas, hover over Reuse Question and click Find Questions.
  2. In the Find Questions window:
    • Under Browse Criteria, click Pools.
    • Select your vendor pool (e.g., Cengage – Chapter 3).
    • (Optional) Filter by Question Type (e.g., Multiple Choice, True/False).
  3. Check the box beside each question you want to include.
  4. Click Submit.

Step 4: Review and Adjust Your Test

  1. Back on the Test Canvas:
    • Review the questions you selected.
    • Adjust point values if needed (default is usually 10 points).
    • Reorder questions using the drag handle.
  2. Click OK to save.

Step 5: Deploy the Test in a Content Area

  1. Go to the Content Area where you want the test to appear (e.g., Quizzes).
  2. Click Assessments > Test.
  3. Select your test from the list and click Submit.
  4. On the Test Options page:
    • Set Availability (and dates if needed).
    • Choose Test Presentation (all questions at once or one at a time).
    • Enable Randomize Questions if desired.
    • Select Feedback Options (what students see after submission).
  5. Click Submit.
