Add an Image (with alt. text) in Blackboard

Written Instructions

  1. Login to Blackboard and navigate to where you want to add an image.
    • For this example we will add an image to Course Contents.
  2. Hover over the Build Content menu,
  3. Click Image from the drop down box.
  4. Under the SELECT IMAGE FILE section you have the following:
    • Find File: Click the Browse My Computer button. Look for the image file on your computer or other storage device. Select the image file and click open to upload your image (Click the Select a Different File button to change the image file.) ·
    • Name: Type the title of the image.
    • Color of Name: Choose a preferred color for the title of the image link.
    • Alt Text: Type a short image description. This is what screen reading software will use to describe an image. Alt Text is required for ADA compliance.
    • Long Description: If the image is complex, you will need to add a longer description. Check out this video to better understand alternative text in short and long form.
  5. Under IMAGE OPTIONS section you have the following:
    • Dimensions: Choose original or custom. For custom, you can adjust the set width and set height fields.
    • Border: Select border options to alter the thickness of the border around the image.
    • Image Target URL: Type the name of a URL or web address that will open when users click on the image. Be sure to include this link in another format for users who do not know the image is linked, perhaps in a caption.
    • Open Target in New Window: Set to launch your image in a new browser window.
  6. Under STANDARD OPTIONS you have the following:
    • Permit Users to View this Content: Click Yes or No to make this link available to users enrolled in the course
    • Track Number of Views: Click Yes or No to enable tracking for the image.
    • Select Date and Time Restrictions: Click the checkboxes to enable. Choose dates and times to Display After and Display Until.
  7. Click to Preview, then Submit to save. If you change your mind, you can click Cancel, but you will lose your work here.

Special Notes

  • Alt Text allows screen readers to “read” the image description, so be sure not to skip the step of adding Alt Text (see Step 4)
  • It is better to adjust the height and width of the image prior to adding to your course.
  • Common web page compatible images include: .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .png
  • When typing the name of the image, you can omit the file extension.
