Getting Started with Panopto
What is Panopto?
Panopto is CVCC’s own video streaming platform. Panopto is the leading video platform for businesses and universities. Using Panopto, anyone can create and share professional on-demand videos securely. Think of Panopto like our own personal YouTube, but with more features! Videos will also be housed in our own as-private-as-you-want-it-to-be space. With Panopto, you can quickly and easily create videos from directly within Blackboard and place them in your Blackboard course. You can also create links to these videos to share via email or other means. Students no longer have to download a huge video file or have to have special software to view the video – they can instead just click to play, and on any device. Creating videos for your students is also quick and easy, which makes Panopto a revolutionary tool for engaging today’s student. Once you’ve created the videos, you can then add graded or non-graded quiz questions, and more

Captioning
Video itself is an exciting new addition to the arsenal of tools available to faculty at CVCC, and included in this solution is the ability to caption. There are slight changes to the captioning process, including a couple of questions you need to ask yourself:
- Have you been notified that you have a student who requires captioning? If so, YES, caption your video.
- Do you intend to use your video for more than one semester? If so, YES, caption your video.
If you answer yes to either of the questions above then YES, caption your video, otherwise you do not need to. Keep in mind that a course’s accessibility is your responsibility, so be sure to answer these questions honestly. The following flowchart should help you make that decision:
In terms of captioning, you can:
- Upload a caption file that was previously created (how to download captioning files from YouTube),
- Caption the file yourself and upload it to Panopto, or
- use Panopto’s machine captioning (automatically generated) and then edit the captions from directly within the site.
